I'm excited to say that wallpaper is making a comeback! In all shades and all patterns- anything goes! Put it in any room- the bedroom, the dining room, the foyer etc.,. Its fun, its cosy and in my opinion, it makes any room more interesting and truly come alive!

Many remember the wallpaper of the 1960s and 1970s, when, according to online sources, bright geometric patterns, pop-art designs and vinyl were all the rage. But by the mid-'80s through the 90's, when I was a kid, wallpaper slowly began to fall out of favour. Instead, homeowners stripped their walls of it- opting for a more minimalist look.

Nowadays, wallpaper has once again is in style. I am really excited about it! In fact, I have wallpaper on accent walls in many of the rooms in my house, including my bathroom, pictured below!

An alternative to paint, wallpaper can bring colour and texture to any room. Recent trends include wallpaper with repeat patterns, vibrant colours and pictures, whereas past trends favoured natural colours and textures. Today’s wallpaper is also easier to remove.

Hanging wallpaper is a great way to brighten up or change the feel of a room without spending the money of a major renovation. It can bring in color, texture or provide a unique feel to any room.

Most common wallpaper types:

  • Vinyl: This is the most commonly used type of wallpaper as it is versatile and can be used in any room. It also comes in mildew-resistant varieties to protect your home. Vinyl is the easiest type of wallpaper to apply and clean.
  • Fabric: Fabric wallpaper is typically attached to vinyl wallpaper to help it adhere to the wall. While the look of fabric can be desirable, it often attracts dirt and dust and can be difficult to clean.

Things to consider before selecting wallpaper:

Look, lifestyle and room size all factor into selecting a type or style of wallpaper. Grass cloth paper provides a classic touch, but if your child plays Picasso on the wall, there’s no washing it off. Consider vinyl-coated wallpaper with kids and in well-worn areas. Pay attention to print size as well. If you’re not planning on staying in your home for several years, pick a neutral wallpaper colour.

Once you have selected your wallpaper, then comes the fun part- the installation! You don't have to be crafty but you should have patience and the right tools for the job! You'll be able to purchase a tray and the smoothing tools at any local hard wear store. Sponges also come in handy!  A second set of hands to help is also a good idea!

Let the wallpapering begin! If you have any questions comments or concerns, please send them along! I'm no pro but I have done my homework and I have been busy wallpapering my own home; I've learned a few "tricks of the trade" along the way! Good luck!
